Junior Skills Challenge Awards

Welcome to the ‘Hooked on Hockey’ Junior Skills Challenge pack. This pack will enable you as a teacher or coach to introduce the sport of Hockey to the pupils at your school or club, whilst at the same time giving the participants targets and levels to achieve based on their skill development over a number of weeks. The pack aims to motivate your pupils/hockey players to develop some of the core skills of hockey needed to progress in the game and sport in general. One of the main aims of the pack is to encourage continued participation in hockey as the young players progress to secondary school hockey and hopefully to clubs outside of the school setting if they only play in school.

This pack will enable you as a teacher or coach to introduce the sport of Hockey to the pupils at your school or club, whilst at the same time giving the participants targets and levels to achieve based on their skill development over a number of weeks. The awards consist of Five hockey challenges designed to test the ability of the players in a competitive situation. This in turn will enhance the basic skills needed in the sport to progress to a higher level. Once the players have completed the challenges they will have the chance to receive either the Bronze, Silver or Gold award in respect of how many points they gained in total after completing  each of the challenges.

Each skill is explained on the activity cards and on a DVD with progressions to enable the players to develop further.

The skills challenge focuses on the following skills

1. Reverse & Open Dragging –  hand speed, reverse technique

2. Dribbling Open & Reverse – body position, vision, carry position, footwork

3. Passing – Dribbling and passing to the left  & forward, push technique

4. Juggling – Hand eye coordination, grip

5. Lifting & Dribbling – Body position, hand speed, footwork, position of the ball
